“Journaling gives you such an appreciation for the good things in your life while also helping you improve on the not-so-good things in your life.”
~ Steve Cicco
Took another truckload of stuff out of the house permanently. It’s amazing how much you can accumulate over a lifetime, especially when you find it very difficult to let go of useful things. Questions and thoughts that get in the way of letting go:
“But what if we need it later?”
“We can’t get rid of that; we paid so much money for it.”
“I don’t want to contribute to filling land fills.”
“What if I regret getting rid of it?”
“We could use that for something” but it hung around for years not getting used for anything.
As I flex my letting-go “muscles” I think it’s getting easier, but it’s still not easy. I have to keep reminding myself that my house is not a storage locker, nor a garbage/recycle station, it’s not my job to store things in the house just because someone might need it some day in the future… maybe… perhaps… probably never.
I ask myself things like:
“If it spontaneously combusted”, would I feel glad, relieved, or would I want to rush out and buy a replacement? (Thank you, The Minimalists, for that question).
Have I used this in the last year? Will I use it in the next year?
If I didn’t have this, what would I do/use instead?
Slowly the things I’m surrounded by represent less and less mediocrity and more mastery.
