It's the start of the Year of the Ox, and, like last year at this time, I'm planning. Last year, some plans worked and other didn't. So, the plan this year?
Break down the year of goals into quarterly goals, monthly goals, weekly goals and daily goals. If at the end of each week my weekly goals aren't complete then I'm giving myself one day (each week) as a catch up day. Hopefully, that way my numbers don't get away from me like most of them did during the Year of the Rat where they became impossible to catch up.
My daily goals are such that if I did them for seven days straight I would accomplish more than my weekly goal. That way I can miss days of training and not mess up the total for the week.
Will this work? I hope so. Yet I know (recognize?) that "Murphy" will try to put a stick through my spokes at some point during the year, perhaps multiple times.
The goals for this year:
The usual ones that all of us on the IHC team are required to work towards
50,000 pushups
50,000 situps
1000 rounds of sparring
1609 kilometers running/walking/biking/rollerblading or equivalent
1000 acts of kindness
blog at least once per week about our journey
learn to lion dance
compete in the Tiger Challenge
qualify and perform in at least three public performances
mend a relationship
zero unexcused absences from IHC classes or meetings
excel with your core class curriculum
organize, lead, and participate in important SRKF projects
memorize and recite Mastery by Stuart Emery
Personal goals
For mend a relationship
As some of you already know, I have a tendency not to call people because I don't want to disturb them. Thus, I tend to call only when I really need to, which can give you the reputation of only calling people when you want something. My plan is to make a point of reaching out to friends and family simply to say "Hi", to connect and nurture relationships. Once a week seemed like good timing for this, I hope, and so I can track it along with my blog posts.
Get out of debt
Another personal goal is to get out of debt, except for our mortgage, this year. I will not be sharing the details of this publicly, but I will share if... when... WHEN it gets accomplished.
Do less so I can accomplish more
One of the big lessons for me during the Year of the Rat, which was my first time on the IHC team, was that I take on too much. I always want to help. I have many interests and many projects and goals on the go. The problem is that I take on so much that I can't fulfill all my promises to people. This is not good! This year I'm learning how to say "no". I'm working on evaluating each thing and asking myself things like, "How does this serve me?" "Can I honestly complete it by the time it needs to be?", "Does this really need to be done?", "Would it be better to delegate this to someone else?", "Why do I want to do this?" I guess you could say I'm learning to practice Mindfulness in making decisions.
In fact, if any of you have helpful questions to ask yourself when evaluating whether you can or should do something I would love to hear what they are so I can add them to my collection and get better at this type of evaluation.
That's the plan for this year. Now, let's see what unfolds!
