The physiotherapist has given me the OK to do exercises other than just the ones she gives me. Still no arm rotations, no lifting weights, and no pushups.
The numbers so far:
Kilometers: 193
Pushup (seconds in plank): 3050
Situps: 2764
Hand Form: 35
Weapon Form (cane this year): 29
Sparring: 59 minutes
Random Acts of Kindness (RAoK): 186
Nearly all of the above have been adversely affected by this shoulder issue. Opening bow in the forms = arm circles. Cane/weapon form contains a lot of overhead and circular movements of the shoulder. Punching in shadow boxing (sparring) also a pain causer. Though I had a wonderful conversation with Sifu Rybak yesterday where she pointed out how I might be able to do those moves with less strain on the shoulder. Thank you Sifu!
So, been thinking a lot about the spinning back kick, since lower body exercises are the thing for me right now. I'm still bad at this kick, but my balance is improving. My problem seems to be when I throw the kick itself. There's all that momentum, and weight (of the leg), going away from the body and nothing to counter balance it. It got me thinking about the ballerina's I've seen who can spin on the spot and with each rotation they can kick their leg out to the side, then bring it back in again for another spin. There's sort of a condensing/centering of energy followed by an explosion/expanding of energy. For an example of what I mean check out this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JJGrDLgIlLU It seems to me that with each kick of the leg out they also drive their weight into the ground before returning for another spin. It makes me wonder if there might be something of that in the spinning back kick as a counter balance since we are so often taught about putting the energy of the earth behind us (supporting us?). There is also the opening up of the body (also pointed out by Sifu), in the spinning back kick, between the leg doing the kicking, through the body, and towards the opposite shoulder. Food for thought... and practice... and experimentation.
