Learning another creature. This time it’s the moose.
Forgot to take into account the fact that beekeeping season is upon us, when I was planning my week. Oops! To be fair to myself, I’ve been waiting for the weather to change so that I can get started on the beekeeping things (among other responsibilities).
It’s always been problematic for me to plan what to do once the beekeeping and growing season(s) starts, and through until autumn. I’m not sure how to remedy this because I end up planning my tasks according to the weather, which changes all the time.
I got a little bit done on dog training but nothing like I wanted to. Worked a little on “au pied”, and whistle recalls. Also did a little bit of work on muzzle training with one of the dogs.
As for my personal training I have been remiss. It’s been a combination of travel, extreme tiredness last week, back pain, and shoulder pain that hasn’t recovered (to previous levels) from using too much weight. It is improving, just not as quickly as I would like.
I want to make a plan for the week but with the change of seasons and the responsibilities that come with it I’m not sure what to do. Perhaps the best plan is simply to really pay attention to where I have spaces for what training and where things can adapt.

Dog Training: See above for most of the details
“Heel”:
“Au Pied”: Some work, but not much
This is the command I’m using for “heel” on the right. Can also be used as a recall.
“With Me”: Some work, but not much
Not as strict as “heel” or “au pied”. They just need to stay near me, whether wearing a leash or not.
Change of position at a distance:
“sit”, “down”, “stand” when they are far away from me
“Out”:
“Here”:
“Middle”:
Their command to stay between my legs. Can also be used as a recall.
“Front”:
Their command to come to me and sit in front of me while facing me. Can also be used as a recall.
“Stand”:
“Done”:
Finished with training, job, etc.
“Settle”:
They can sit or lie down (their choice) but they must stay there and be quiet.
“Place”:
Go to and stay on your bed.
“Zip It”:
Their command to be quiet.
Walking a plank:
Walking on a board whether level or inclined. Useful for when large dogs get older and lose some of their mobility (esp. on stairs).
Muzzle: Some work
Making it no big deal for them. Useful, just in case (I’ve had one dog in the past who needed it). Also, a useful (more compact) alternative for “the cone of shame” if they need surgery.
Differentiation:
They currently struggle with doing commands independently from each other. Also, need to work on the difference between “crate” and “place”, which they frequently get mixed up.
Whistle commands: Checked where we were at, but that’s about it, and it was only on recall.
Individual whistles for each dog. For example, the recall whistle is different for each dog.
“Here”: Whistle established.
This is a recall.
“Away”:
Circle object/herd anticlockwise
“Come By”:
Circle object/herd clockwise
“Walk On”:
Move forward
“Steady”:
Slow down
