I Am a Student

I am a life-long learner

I am a sponge… soaking up knowledge wherever and whenever I can. There is no one that you can’t learn from. I have learned from small children to elderly adults. It doesn’t matter how old someone is. It also doesn’t matter how much you already know about a given subject, there is ALWAYS something more to learn!

One of the things that I have found in the past, and is becoming even clearer this year, with the drawing I have been doing, is that I can understand a thing better when I draw it. Not only that, drawing has helped me get past writing blocks that I’ve had in past IHC years when it comes to the blogging. Even if a drawing seems unrelated to Kung Fu, the act of drawing brings things, concepts, to mind. Some concepts have always been there and this simple act has merely brought them to the surface. Others are new ways of thinking of things, or new angles to look at things.

Many IHC members have said that posting their numbers has helped them stay on track better. For me that is what I have been enjoying about posting my drawings. Wanting to have a drawing (no matter how rough) for the blog helps keep me drawing.

Today’s drawing is a Tiger Salamander study. It is drawn using ball point pen. Tiger Salamanders are native to Alberta, which I learned after we started mulching our gardens because these guys started showing up in my garden and stairwell. When looking for photos to study I discovered that the juvenile Tiger Salamanders have those lovely feathery gills. Salamanders are a sign of good health in the environment because they are very susceptible to chemicals. So, I guess our garden is healthy. These guys are predators that help get rid of pests in the garden too. Something I learned from drawing them is that the front feet have four toes while the back ones have five. Even though I’ve picked these Salamanders up and handled them it wasn’t until I tried drawing them that I noticed this detail.

Maybe I should start drawing the Kung Fu moves that I struggle with so that I can understand them better?
